David Owen Filson is husband to Diane, Daddy to Luke and Lydia, and minister at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, PCA in Nashville, TN, where he chairs the theological examining committee of the Nashville Presbytery. David is also a Ph.D. student in Historical and Theological Studies at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. Both Kinds of Grace is a blog focused primarily on Historical Theology, and other related theological tidbits. The title of this blog comes from Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion, wherein, discussing regeneration and repentance, Calvin writes, “Now, both repentance and forgiveness of sins – that is, newness of life and free reconciliation – are conferred on us by Christ, and both are attained by us through faith” (III.III.1). He later simply refers to this dynamic duplex as “both kinds of grace” (III.III.19). At its best, Historical Theology is the critical study and savoring of the Church’s declaring, defending, and delighting in this grace.
